Shrinkflation in Canada: 10 Products That Quietly Got Smaller
From cereal boxes to yogurt tubs, we tracked size changes across thousands of products. These 10 had the biggest reductions in the last 12 months.
We analyzed size data from thousands of grocery products sold in Canada over the past 12 months. These 10 had the most significant reductions — often without any change to the packaging design or shelf price.
How we track it
When Ghostflation users scan receipts, we capture product names, prices, and — where available — package sizes. By comparing the same product over time, we can detect when the weight, volume, or count decreases while the price stays the same or increases.
We also cross-reference barcode databases and manufacturer product pages to verify size changes.

The pattern
Most of these changes share common traits:
- - No announcement. None of these changes were publicly disclosed by the manufacturer.
- - Package redesign as cover. Several coincided with "new look" packaging updates.
- - Price held or slightly reduced. Manufacturers know consumers are price-sensitive, so they anchor the visible price while shrinking content.
- - Staple categories hit hardest. Cereals, dairy, snacks, and pantry items — the products you buy on autopilot.
What you can do
- - Check unit prices on shelf labels (price per 100g or per litre).
- - Scan your receipts with Ghostflation — we flag shrinkflation automatically when we detect size changes.
- - Compare across brands. Sometimes store brands haven't shrunk yet while name brands have.
- - Report it. When you spot shrinkflation, it helps the whole community. Our aggregated data makes these patterns visible to everyone.
